　　段落除了要具备思想（idea）和主题（topic）的统一性之外，还需要做到表达的连贯性。所谓段落的连贯性，指的是段落内的句子自然地连接在一起（naturally and logically linked together）而不是散乱地堆积在一起。段落的连贯一般说来有两层具体的含义

　　所谓逻辑连贯，指的是内容和意义的内在连贯。对于段落来说，每个句子都必须围绕主题，同时要根据论述手法，采取合理的布局。在论述的过程中，要分清层次和顺序，做到有条不紊地进行。例如，在举例上，可以按照历史的顺序由远及近；在论述上，可以从抽象到具体（演绎），也可以从具体到抽象（归纳）。总之，采取什么样的论证方式，都必须符合一定的逻辑形式。

2. 形式连贯（Coherence in formality）

　　所谓形式连贯，指的是段落内的每一个句子，在必要的时候都需要用到过渡意义的词语（可以视连词，也可以是副词）（Transitional lexicon）实现句子形式上的连贯。这些连接词种类多样，有表达先后顺序的，有表达因果关联的，有表达转折关联的等等。总之，这些连词就像胶水（glue）一样，将段落内的句子牢牢地粘合在一起，形成一个语义上的整体。以下面主题为介绍黄金的段落为例（特别注意划线部分的连接词（transitional words）

　　Gold is a precious metal with some important physicalcharacteristics. Firstly, it is shiningly beautiful and attractive. Thereforeit is highly suitable for making jewelry, coins and decorations. Contrasting to other metals such as iron and bronze, gold is especially resistant to rust;thus it does not need to be polished for use. This is the very reason why very ancient gold coins still remain unchanged in color. Another important characteristicis the wide usage in industrial production and scientific research. For example, gold has been widely used in chips and other important electronic components. On the whole, gold is one of the most popular and useful metal for human society.
